At Least It Hasn’t Been Renamed Linux 2001
Linus Torvalds and the Linux community released another test version of the Linux 2.4 kernel in late May, 2000. New features are delaying this version which was originally scheduled for October 1999.
THE RED HAT RESTAURANT BOSTON
: asked about delays to Red Hat distributions of 2.4-derived products, Red Hat officials had no comment. Market Impact A nearly infinite number of penguins, eventually, can develop a great operating system. The challenges are twofold: Steering the flock toward product features they may not want to develop Waiting for the flock to get there Big things await Linux 2.4 when it comes out. Red Hat’s Linux Domination Weakens
Red Hat still controls the Linux market, but now it’s getting some competition from SuSE, Caldera, and TurboLinux.
THE RED HAT RESTAURANT BOSTON
: recently figures from IDC, Red Hat was still the #1 distributor of the Linux operating system in 1999 by a wide margin, with a 48% share of the copies shipped. Trailing Red Hat were German vendor SuSE with a 15% share, and Caldera Systems and TurboLinux with 10% each. (See Figure 1) Bringing up the rear were MandrakeSoft (4%) and Corel (1%). Figure 1. A potential area of concern for Red Hat is the sales growth of its next three competitors. From 1998 to 1999, the Linux market overall grew by 89% (by
