Red Hat’s Linux Domination Weakens
Red Hat still controls the Linux market, but now it’s getting some competition from SuSE, Caldera, and TurboLinux.

IBM Loads Linux on Mainframes
IBM has announced that it will now provide Linux support and services for its largest machines, the S/390 Series of mainframes/servers.

SUSE LINUX 8.0: offered by the companies SuSE and TurboLinux. In addition, IBM Global Services will offer complete Linux for S/390 services and support. IBM is also making available key middleware. A major advantage of Linux for S/390 is the access that mainframe users will have to the applications being written for Linux, including hundreds of open source applications already available on the Internet. Inprise/Borland Challenges Other Vendors to Open-Source Their Database Code
In a move which will challenge other database vendors to open-source their SQL databases, Inprise/Borland Corporation has announced it is releasing the source code for its InterBase 6 cross-platform SQL database. It will provide the database on multiple platforms, including Linux, Windows NT, and Sun Solaris, make the database available at no charge, and spin the InterBase division off into a separate company.
